Glocalization

WC = 1,489 GEO 101 Dr. Housel April 20, 2012 Nike †Hilversum, The Netherlands Hilversum, The Netherlands Hilversum, The Netherlands Beaverton, OR Beaverton, OR Have you at any point known about the expression â€Å"Just Do It? † Do you know what the ‘Swoosh’ is that speaks to Nike’s logo? Nike’s base camp in the United States is in Beaverton, Oregon and turned into a standard wearing deals company in 1978. The notoriety of their attire expanded when numerous competitors marked an agreement to advance and wear Nike in brandishing events.Since residents in different nations blossomed with Nike garments, Nike at long last went abroad to manufacture a company in The Netherlands (or The Dutch); this task was finished in 1999. The central command is situated with simple access to the train station and was the site of a previous outfit track and Olympic preparing ground (McDonough). Nike items are offered to clients around the globe. The sports equipme nt is made to have style and get the attention of others. In the event that the deals were acceptable and there wasn’t a backslide, at that point for what reason did Nike go overseas? In 2007, Nike got a lift kindness of good trade rates; a more vulnerable dollar implies more noteworthy deals abroad, as the items are evaluated all the more efficiently (Forbes). The pay that Nike gets is flourished with by numerous highlights including advancements, new apparatus, and competitors. The two advancements and new apparatus have to do with purchasers adjusting their expenses to Nike for their arrangements and readiness to pay for the item. Competitors are the ones who sign an arrangement (either with Nike, Adidas, Under Armor, etc†¦) to wear and urge watchers to purchase their attire while partaking in their sport. As Nike moved into Europe where soccer is well known, increasingly European soccer experts made agreements with Nike. In past years, Nike has been one of the most pro ductive organizations to exceed expectations in abroad deals with arriving at 1. 48 billion dollars every year (Forbes). As football keeps on being ascend in the United States, Nike deals in football hardware are doing likewise. Similarly, soccer is predominant in Europe, in this manner more soccer gear is being created abroad; every partnership will deliver whatever acquires the most capital. The Netherlands’ most famous game is soccer, with the Royal Dutch League being the biggest games organization in the nation with over a million players (WIKI). Following the exchange of Nike going to Hilversum, The Netherlands National Soccer Team that partakes in the Olympics changed patrons to Nike in gratefulness and to help the new company. Watchers understood the move and deals of The Netherlands gear rose to an untouched high. Another motivation behind why they worked in The Dutch was their living standards. The Dutch succeed through existence with building affluent families and nei ghborhoods to give one of the most appealing spots to settle in. The design of Nike’s Corporate Office in Northern Europe mirrors the innovativeness and eye-getting strategies they have faith in. At the point when Nike went worldwide, they made a point to adjust to the way of life of The Netherlands and Northern Europe †in the event that they didn’t and continued everything that Americans saw as ordinary, representatives may not feel great in the workplace.Once the structure was closed down, modelers had just begun executing an arrangement to make the engineering of the new Nike European Headquarters coordinate the remarkable, lovely plans of different structures in The Netherlands. The imaginative organization of planners, William McDonough + Partners, has manufactured numerous structures in Europe and this was their next test. In 1999, following quite a while of work, the structure was fit to be put to utilize and draw in everyone in sight. The piece of culture that sports, particularly soccer, plays in Northern Europe is a strong. Therefore, it’d be brilliant to set up grounds around the Headquarters to advance games; and that’s what they did. The Nike European Headquarters site was at one time a previous outfit track and Olympic preparing ground that currently proceeds with the convention of physical greatness through a running track, a focal lake that freezes in the winter for an ice arena, and various athletic fields and courts (McDonough). Nike invites clients all day every day to visit their grounds and appreciate the outside comradery with the remainder of the community. Also, Nike made and purchased numerous soccer clothing types to offer to the soccer-like clients in the district. True to form, the pieces of clothing were a hit and that lone made various kinds of soccer apparatus to be delivered. The general population was very interested with the exertion and innovativeness of Nike workers, driving the whole Nike orga nization (in both Europe and the United States) to get increases of just about two billion dollars per year. A fundamental ecological angle The Netherlands prospers on is ‘going green. By and by, giving sound air and helping nature with an eco-accommodating structure is additionally what the draftsmen did. The Headquarters in Europe is supposed to be the most conspicuous case of green structure and the green unrest is spreading to noteworthy tourist spots around the Northern European territory now (Preservations). The structure had achievement in doing the training that they predicted later on. This engineering theory endeavors to limit structures asset and vitality needs by utilizing reused or inexhaustible structure materials, sun oriented force, and water proficiency (Preservations). The people group was in amazement when the structure was finished on the grounds that they understood the new structure in Hilversum was ecological benevolent and zeroed mischief to society with sparing vitality. The Nike Headquarters in Hilversum opened up in 1999 †clients and representatives promptly acknowledged within the structure due to the craftsmanship put all through the structure. The workmanship that is generally acknowledged in Northern Europe is Flemish and Dutch because of strict foundations of most. Nike felt it would be progressively acknowledged whether they place these sorts of workmanship all through the structure, in another method of a warm greeting to everyone that enters. The changes that Nike in Europe did from Nike in the United States put on inside is huge and the McDonough accomplices made a marvelous showing with it. By and large, most organizations lose cash when they redistribute and go abroad. At the point when Nike worked in Hilversum, the allure the structure brought to the region urged everybody to visit, purchase their clothing, and have a ton of fun outside the Headquarters. The primary cost Nike needed to stress over was promoting t he new Headquarters and garments that was being produced. But after Nike endured a shot in the United States from low deals, Nike in Europe accomplished more than making up the lack and delivered up to one point four eight billion dollars in the earlier year (Forbes). The deals didn't tighten, as they supposedly did, and Nike keeps on being incredibly mainstream in places other than simply the United States. Nike assembling a Headquarters abroad was perhaps the best thought they could have actualized as an overall organization. At the point when they saw the deals weren’t expanding in the states and the dollar was down in Europe, they took the savvy move and delivered in Hilversum.Right away, the organization generally prospered and gave a methods for sports equipment to the European country. The glocalization that Nike did made them much all the more an incredibly famous element to purchase sportswear and to have alluring garments that was purchased at an extraordinary cost. The takeaway for organizations extending abroad is about rivalry and giving speedier access to things others don’t have close to them. For example, the opposition that was brought to Europe when Nike moved took into account those individuals to look at Nike instead of home-named brands that were in the area. Also, despite the fact that Nike was as yet known about, they needed to arrange it from the United States, which included long stretches of movement and abundance cash of delivery than if Nike was inside scope of their homes. Prior to composing this paper, I didn’t understand that glocalization was a major piece of how organizations exceed expectations abroad. In the wake of seeing the positives it brings, I accept increasingly American organizations ought to grow abroad with a Headquarters (just not a sweatshop). I thought it was special in that Nike gave a spot that made adjusting easy to the new structure; it made constrained disarray and extraordinary mentalitie s all through their new workplace. If I were a leader of an organization and needed to get more capital than I was getting, I would arrive at an indistinguishable arrangement to what Nike did and outperform any assessment or expectation that individuals would make on what the abroad business would accomplish for the organization around the world. Reasons Why You May Have a Blind Spot in Your Eye

Reasons Why You May Have a Blind Spot in Your Eye Theories Biological Psychology Print Reasons Why You May Have a Blind Spot in Your Eye By Kendra Cherry facebook twitter Kendra Cherry, MS, is an author, educational consultant, and speaker focused on helping students learn about psychology. Learn about our editorial policy Kendra Cherry Updated on January 21, 2020 Caelan Stulken / EyeEm / Getty Images More in Theories Biological Psychology Behavioral Psychology Cognitive Psychology Developmental Psychology Personality Psychology Social Psychology Psychosocial Psychology The human eye is pretty good at accurately detecting an enormous array of information about the world around us, but it does have its limitations. One example of this is a blind spot or a small portion of the visual field that corresponds to the location of the optic disk located at the back of the eye. The blind spot is the location on the retina known as the optic disk where the optic nerve fiber exit the back of the eye. Causes The optic disk is approximately 1.5 millimeters or 0.06 inches in diameter. In addition to being the point where the optic nerve  exits the eye, it is also where the major blood vessels enter to provide blood flow to the eye. Because there are no cones or rods at this point on the retina, there is a very small gap in the visual field. You literally have a very tiny gap in your vision where you are essentially blind. Why Dont We Notice the Blind Spot? While there are ways to force yourself to notice this blind spot, we typically do not notice this visual gap in our day to day lives. Why? Researchers have proposed a number of different explanations as to why we do not notice this blind spot. Some suggest that the opposite eye compensates for the missing visual information.?? This suggests that when both eyes are open, the visual fields overlap and fill in the missing information for the opposite eye. One of the most commonly accepted theories is that the brain actually fills in the missing information using visual cues in the environment. Even if you close one eye, the blind spot is almost impossible to detect. This is because your brain is so adept at providing the missing visual information so that you never notice that small gap in your visual field. If you would like to actually notice your own blind spot, you can see the phenomenon in action in this blind spot demonstration. Can You Shrink Your Blind Spot? Surprisingly, researchers have found that you might actually be able to shrink your blind spot by using certain eye training exercises. In a small study involving just 10 participants, researchers found that using specific eye exercises could shrink the blind spot by as much as 10 percent.?? The exercises used in the study involved placing an image of a small ring directly in a persons blind spot and displaying waves of light and dark bands moving through the ring. The participants were asked to determine which way the bands were moving as well as the color of the ring. The size of the ring was manipulated so that at the beginning of the study, it was detectable about 70 percent of the time, then the researchers modified the size so that it was eventually so small it was completely hidden by the blind spot. Over time, the participants were better able to detect the smaller image in their blind spot as well as judge the color of the ring and direction of the moving bands. This reduction in the size of the blind spot represents a very small improvement in vision. The research suggests that this improvement would be so small that people would not even notice it, partly because most people dont even notice their blind spot anyways. The results might open up new ways of treating certain types of visual problems. How to Test for a Blind Spot As you have learned, the blind spot is an area on your retina that has no visual receptors. Because of this, there is a tiny gap in your visual field. While your brain usually fills in the missing information so that you dont notice it, this quick and easy test makes it possible to demonstrate the blind spot. Open this image in another browser window. Start by covering your left eye and looking at the star shape with your right eye. Slowly move forward closer and closer toward your computer screen, all the while looking at the star. At some point, you will notice that the circular dot on the right will disappear. That is because it is in your blind spot! If you move even closer to the screen, the dot will suddenly reappear once it moves out of the blind spot on your retina. You can also do the same thing with your other eye. This time, cover your right eye and look at the circular dot with your left eye. Move closer to your monitor until the star suddenly disappears. The Politics Of Sexual Difference World War I And The...

The articles â€Å"The Politics of Sexual Difference: World War I and the Demise of British Feminism† by Susan Kingsley Kent, and â€Å"Our Freedom and its Results: Measuring progress in the aftermath of Suffrage† by Maria DiCenzo discuss arguments in relation to post war british feminism and the constitutional suffragists efforts to maintain rights especially those pertaining to enfranchisement. Kents article â€Å"The Politics of Sexual Difference: World War I and the Demise of British Feminism† states that as a result of the great war, Britain had seen an end to both militant and constitutional suffragists efforts in regards to obtaining votes for women. She argues that although the suffrage campaign was considered a mass movement due to its sheer†¦show more content†¦She argues that many suffragists and activists continued to campaign during the interwar period and as a result created the momentum needed to tackle other complex struggles on a variety of fronts. DiCenzo especially stresses the importance of not taking a forced approach to sources from the time period and encourages strategies to foster a more comprehensive understanding about feminism in the interwar period. Reading Kent’s article and her interpretation of the documents provided by suffragettes from the interwar time period, it is evident that she supports what DiCenzo refers to as the ‘demise view’ which is also a common school of thought when debating feminism in the interwar period. Her argument is straightforward and easily comprehensible in the fact that she supports her ideas with good evidence that supports her conclusion. Kent uses a collection of books and essays quoting women suffragettes and feminists themselves (both â€Å"equalitarian† and new feminism feminists) in order to achieve a well rounded opinion. Kent begins her argument by expressing quotes from many feminists that make it evident that women were feeling backlash from their male counterparts during the post war era. Many women were encouraged by men to retreat from the labor force and return back to traditional gender roles as mothers and housewives. Cicely

Advantages of Activity Based Costing Free Essays

In modern business environment, the use of traditional costing system is no longer relevance to the company to achieve competitive advantage. Nowadays, Activity Based Costing is considered as one of the effective tools to enhance the ability of the organisation to meet global competition. This had resulted in the change from traditional costing system to an increasingly popular costing system such Activity-Based Costing (ABC). We will write a custom essay sample on Advantages of Activity Based Costing or any similar topic only for you Order Now ABC system has emerged as an alternative to traditional costing system to meet the need for accurate cost information about the products, services, customer and processes. ABC performs the arithmetic to provide accurate cost information while Activity Based Management (ABM) is focused on using this information obtained from ABC to manage activities in order to improving business (Gunasekaran et al. , 2000). Generally ABC systems enable indirect and support expenses onto each activity. Following by identify the cost drivers to measure the activity used by cost objects and allocate them to cost driver. In order word, ABC helps the manager to understand about the cost and expense in each production by giving managers a clearer picture of the economics of their operations to managerial decision making at a strategic level (Kaplan and Copper, 1998). Apart from that, in twenty-first century market which is global consumer markets and rapidly changing product technologies have forced global manufacturers to make dramatic changes in their products, markets as well as production strategies. In order to stay in the global market, organisations are advice to adopt ABC not only produces products at faster rates, but they produce with greater consistency and conformity to quality specifications. Also, ABC system allows the manufacturers to reduce the time between customer order and product delivery which can gives the manufacturer a competitive advantage in improving customer service (Gunasekaran et al. , 1999). Therefore, it is necessary for organisation to adopt ABC system which can assist managers in identifying the value-added activities which they could further improve to meet customer’s demands and enhancing the product quality and process simplification and efficiency (Marx, 2009). For example, MelCo is the company that implements ABC and gets the benefits from it. MelCo is the only manufacturer of engineering components in Melbourne. Its previous costing system was a conventional costing system where overheads were allocated to products based on labour hour utilised (Sohal and Chung, 1998). However, management found that implement ABC system in the organisation is seem to be useful because it can assist high level of flexibility and responsiveness that demanded by the marketplace. Besides, ABC system can generate true costing and pricing which automatically give performance measures and product profitability as well as provide a variety of information for management in strategic decision making. Even though it incur high cost, MelCo think that it is worthiness because it provides a tool for management for commercial decision making although it just implement for 12 months (Sohal and Chung, 1998). Due to the changes of business environment, the company requires to manufacture very wide product range for a large customer base with high quality and innovative products in order to fulfil the demand of the consumer. By implementing ABC in organisation, ABM guides efforts to adapt business strategies to meet competitive pressures as well as to improve business operations. ABC information enables ABM to yield continuous improvement process. By continuous improvement, organisation can yield the maximum profitability as well as improved the customer’s satisfaction (Gunasekaran et al. 2000). Nowadays, customers want products and services that fit their specific needs; they want quality service at affordable price to be right now. However, since traditional costing system is volume-based, inaccurate information will be generated which lead to company make wrong decision (Gunasekaran et al. , 1999). Apart from that, stable product and mass production are no longer valid for today manufacturing system. Thus, manufacturing companies have reduced the implication of traditional cost accounting system by implementing ABC systems. In contrast to standard costing, ABC can identify value-added and non-value-added activities. To clarify this, all activities should be compared with similar activities in another company or within the organisation in order to perform the best. Hence, benchmarking should be encourages to be carried out for both value-added and non-value added activities because it is a best practice which is mostly used in real-life situation (Gunasekaran et al. , 1999). For example, 100% on time delivery of customer orders is an essential activity. Apart from that, non-value-added activities such as inspection and material handling can be reduced by using different quality assurance methods and techniques such as total quality management and just in time. With ABC, the company has a better access to decision which related to TQM and JIT (Gunasekaran et al. , 1999). To achieve cost reduction in a strategic way, activity-based costing presents to be more accurate in determining costly activities in order to help companies to better manage those activities. Unlike the information available under traditional management accounting, ABC systems are capture the significant information among customer orders and provide strategic decision making with the indication of the changes in the customer’s specifications (Lere, 2000). By implementing ABC system, it also can reduce non-value activities as well as cost of their products to compete in today competitive market. Non-value added activities can be eliminated with the implementation of strategies such as total quality management, just in time and business process re-engineering. Managers should pay more attention to those activities which will incur high cost but does not add any value to the product. Besides, managers prepared with the ABC systems were able to reduce overall costs, identify the opportunities for continuous improvement of the products. Nowadays, technology plays a dominant role of integrating various functional areas. Although the automation in advanced manufacturing environment has reduced the labour component, at the same time overheads have increased (Gunasekaran et al. , 1999). Therefore, in manufacturing environment, it is necessary for organisation to minimize non-value adding activities to reduce the cost of their products to compete in the market. By implementing ABC system in organisation, it will help to reduce direct labour component, increase in overheads as well as productivity of knowledge workers. Apart from that, ABC also helps organisation in better communications and team working environment as well as reduce time required to perform an activities due to knowledge workers and re-engineering the suggestions by employees to reduce the non-value activities (Gunasekaran et al. 1999). In contrast, the traditional costing systems do not provide non-financial information such as defect rates, level of quality about the organisation. However, implementation of activity based costing is not an easy task as there are several difficulties in implementing ABC system. One of the first fundamentals for the success of an ABC implementation is top management support for the project (Zhang and Che, 2010). The failure of ABC projects can generally be attributed to lack of visible and active management. If the organisation’s senior managers do not show the commitment and act passive in the program, it will negatively reduce the motivation of the employees. Apart from that, the productivity of the employees will also affect as well. Therefore, top management should be give full support with clear understanding of goals and objectives of the whole organisation to the employees. Besides, they should meet regularly in order to advise the management on the strategic and technology business problems (Gunasekaran et al. , 1999). Commitment of employees is one of the important factors in implementing ABC system. For the successful implementation in ABC, the employees must have a clear understanding of its capabilities, goals and objectives (Zhang and Che, 2010). As a result, education and training are necessary for the employees to make sure that they understand the objective of ABC system. When the employees are well trained and educated, they can easily reduce the time and effort required to perform an activity, on-time delivery as well as reduce the cycle time of the product. Also, employees should be provide with internal and external company training facilities to ensure them gain latest knowledge and trend in order to maintain company’s standard in today global market (Zhang and Che, 2010). For example, MelCo is a company that implementing ABC system and it found that the problems during implementation was lack of available skills in-house which means that they do not have considerable amount of education and training. Therefore, MelCo are recommended that training of employees should be taking into consideration (Sohal and Chung, 1998). As a conclusion, the changes of global business environment had changes the way of the company doing the business and shift traditional management accounting to strategic management accounting for cost management in organisations. However, it does not means that traditional management accounting is usefulness and not applicable in today business environment. Relevance of traditional cost accounting is very subjective in each view of the organisation. It may be suitable for some companies treated standard costing and variance analysis as a tool that enhances planning and control and improves performance evaluation rather than abolished it. To compete in today business environment, strategic management accounting is the most suitable accounting system for the organisation as ABC method can provides more accurate and better cost information which can helps manager to understand and make strategic decision making. Furthermore, ABC system can eliminate the non-value added activities which added value to the product cost, by doing so, organisation can reduce those unnecessary costs. Thus, ABC system is most appropriate management accounting costing in today business environment. However, there are several problems and difficulties in implementing ABC system, company should take into consideration when implementing ABC in order to maximize the fully benefits for ABC systems. Prepare a Persuasive Speech in 5 Easy Steps

Talking comes naturally to us and we dont even give our conversations the second thought. But when faced with the prospect of speaking in front of the audience, this seems a burden. By far, the best way to learn how to write persuasive speeches is to read the great ones. But if you are looking for some quick tips, here are a few steps to follow. 1. Learn about a Topic A major part of the difficulty about writing a persuasive speech is choosing a topic and learning about it. You need to know as much as possible about the subject you need to speak on. Spend some time doing a research and learn all the sides of the issue. You may read academic books in a library or find relevant articles online but make sure to use only reliable sources. To find out what other people think about a topic, use radio talks or editorials, but dont rely on them as your only source of information as they may be biased. 2. Define Your Goal You have to understand what you need to achieve with your speech. Do you want to present your own opinion on the issue? Make a sale? Persuade your audience to vote? Or perform some other action? Once you define what you expect from the audience, youll be able to easily craft your message. It is also important to understand the views and knowledge of your audience about a topic. People who know little about the subject need some background information and simpler language. However, the experts on the topic may find this kind of speech boring. 3. Write a Strong Opening Before you can start persuading your audience, you have to attract their attention. A strong and effective opening has the following elements: An attention grabber – this can be a little startling or dramatic statement that will get your audiences attention instantly. A link to the audience – you need to emphasize that you have something in common with the audience. Your goal – explain what you hope the speech will accomplish. A road map – present the main points of your speech. 4. Offer Persuasive Evidence The main body of your speech should include several convincing reasons to support your point of view. Arrange these points logically. Make sure to use credible sources from your research to back up these points. You may use the real life examples that the audience can relate to. Even the argument based on facts and logic should relate to the audiences interests and lives. 5. Conclude with a Call to Action The conclusion of your speech should remind your audience of what you have told them. But dont just restate your point of view, instead, use this as a chance to present a clear call to action. Use concise and strong sentences that elicit confidence. You dont want to sound as passive or timid. Dont be afraid to use some humor in your speech. It will connect you to the audience and make your topic easier to hear about. Write like you talk and remember that practice makes perfect!

Manchu Dynasty essays

Manchu Dynasty essays Through the power of the Manchu Dynasty, Chinas empire was able to reach a high point in their history. There was an internal problem as well as outside pressure, which led to its fall. The Manchu, or Qing dynasty lasted for almost 300 years with a system of an organized government ruling. Chinese culture was being absorbed as rulers ruled over the land. Confucianism ideas were kept through the years of rule. The Manchu dynasty was established by the Jurchen, a nomadic tribe from Manchuria. The Manchu dynasty lasted from 1644-1911. The downfall of the Ming dynasty brought the beginning of the Manchu period. The south of China faced many serious problems such as bad weather, which created bad harvests, famine, and raids. Soldiers and peasants would raid the towns just for food. Another problem was the population problem, which China faced and could not control. Manchu rulers introduced a system of checks and balances to the organization. The status of peasants had become much less as time went on. Most of the empires money had gone for foreign expansion and also internal corruption. Government positions were held by both Chinese and Manchurian people. All throughout China, the taxes were raised to a higher level, which started peasant uprisings. Chinese trade was restricted to only a certain amount of people, but the most exporting and trading went to three main nations, Britain, the United States, and France. A lot of tea was sold and Opium was introduced to China from the British. Gold and silver was all that could be traded in exchange. Foreign merchants were able to make a lot of money selling Chinese products in foreign nations. Opium first came from India. A struggle among the Chinese government led to a struggle about the thoughts of the Opium trade, which had bloomed in China. They believed that opium was bad for their people and it dropped the amount of silver China had. In 1839, the Chinese...

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Quotes

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Quotes The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a supernatural tale by Washington Irving. Here are a few famous quotes from the story. Quotes The chief part of the stories, however, turned upon the favorite specter of Sleepy Hollow, the Headless Horseman, who had been heard several times of late, patrolling the country; and, it was said, tethered his horse nightly among the graves in the churchyard. I profess not to know how women’s hearts are wooed and won. To me, they have always been matters of riddle and admiration. Some seem to have but one vulnerable point, or door of access; while others have a thousand avenues, and may be captured in a thousand different ways. It is a great triumph of skill to gain the former, but a still greater proof of generalship to maintain possession of the latter, for a man must battle for his fortress at every door and window. He who wins a thousand common hearts is therefore entitled to some renown; but he who keeps undisputed sway over the heart of a coquette, is indeed a hero. On mounting a rising ground, which brought the figure of his fellow-traveller in relief against the sky, gigantic in height, and muffled in a cloak, Ichabod was horror-struck on perceiving that he was headless! – but his horror was still more increased on observing that the head, which should have rested on his shoulders, was carried before him on the pommel of his saddle! It was, as I have said, a fine autumnal day; the sky was clear and serene, and nature wore that rich and golden livery which we always associate with the idea of abundance. The forests had put on their sober brown and yellow, while some trees of the tenderer kind had been nipped by the frosts into brilliant dyes of orange, purple, and scarlet. Local tales and superstitions thrive best in these sheltered, long settled retreats; but are trampled under foot, by the shifting throng that forms the population of most of our country places. Besides, there is no encouragement for ghosts in most of our villages, for they have scarce had time to finish their first nap, and turn themselves in their graves, before their surviving friends have traveled away from the neighborhood, so that when they turn out of a night to walk the rounds, they have no acquaintance left to call upon. This is perhaps the reason why we so seldom hear of ghosts except in our long-established Dutch communities. As the enraptured Ichabod fancied all this, and as he rolled his great green eyes over the fat meadow-lands, the rich fields of wheat, of rye, of buckwheat, and Indian corn, and the orchards burthened with ruddy fruit, which surrounded the warm tenement of Van Tassel, his heart yearned after the damsel who was to inherit these domains, and his imagination expanded with the idea, how they might be readily turned into cash, and the money invested in immense tracts of wild land, and shingle palaces in the wilderness. Nay, his busy fancy already realized his hopes, and presented to him the blooming Katrina, with a whole family of children, mounted on the top of a wagon loaded with household trumpery, with pots and kettles dangling beneath; and he beheld himself bestriding a pacing mare, with a colt at her heels, setting out for Kentucky, Tennessee, or the Lord knows where! Ichabod only lingered behind, according to the custom of country lovers, to have a tete-a-tete with the heiress; fully convinced that he was now on the high road to success. What passed at this interview I will not pretend to say, for in fact, I do not know. Something, however, I fear me, must have gone wrong, for he certainly sallied forth, after no very great interval, with an air quite desolate and chopfallen- Oh these women! these women! Could that girl have been playing off any of her coquettish tricks?- Was her encouragement of the poor pedagogue all a mere sham to secure her conquest of his rival?- Heaven only knows, not I! The mysterious event caused much speculation at the Church on the following Sunday. Knots of gazers and gossips were collected in the churchyard, at the bridge, and at the spot where the hat and pumpkin had been found. The stories of Brouwer, of Bones, and a whole budget of others, were called to mind; and when they had diligently considered them all and compared them with the symptoms of the present case, they shook their heads, and came to the conclusion that Ichabod had been carried off by the galloping Hessian. As he was a bachelor, and in nobody’s debt, nobody troubled his head any more about him, the school was removed to a different quarter of the hollow, and another pedagogue reigned in his stead. This neighborhood, at the time of which I am speaking, was one of those highly favored places which abound with chronicle and great men. The British and American line had run near it during the war- it had, therefore, been the scene of marauding, and been infested with refugees, cowboys, and all kinds of border chivalry. Just sufficient time had elapsed to enable each storyteller to dress up his tale with a little becoming fiction, and in the indistinctness of his recollection, to make himself the hero of every exploit. The schoolmaster is generally a man of some importance in the female circle of a rural neighborhood, being considered a kind of idle gentlemanlike personage, of vastly superior taste and accomplishments to the rough country swains, and, indeed, inferior in learning only to the parson. There was something extremely provoking in this obstinately pacific system; it left Brom no alternative but to draw upon the funds of rustic waggery in his disposition, and to play off boorish practical jokes upon his rival. It was a matter of no little vanity to him, on Sundays, to take his station in front of the church gallery, with a band of chosen singers; where, in his own mind, he completely carried away the palm from the parson. Certain it is, his voice resounded far above all the rest of the congregation; and there are peculiar quavers still to be heard in that church, and which may even be heard half a mile off, quite to the opposite side of the mill-pond, on a still Sunday morning, which are said to be legitimately descended from the nose of Ichabod Crane. Thus, by divers little make-shifts in that ingenious way which is commonly denominated â€Å"by hook and by crook,† the worthy pedagogue got on tolerably enough, and was thought, by all who understood nothing of the labor of headwork, to have a wonderfully easy life of it. The old country wives, however, who are the best judges of these matters, maintain to this day that Ichabod was spirited away by supernatural means; and it is a favorite story often told about the neighborhood round the winter evening fire.

Analysis of qualitative research article Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Analysis of qualitative research article - Essay Example Inappropriate assessment of patients by nurses may result in high incidences of suicide. Both qualitative and quantitative assessment methods are available for use and the method used may be depend on the setting. Purpose The purpose of the research was to understand how nurses conceptualize suicide among patients in addition to the strategies they use in the process of assessment. Due to the emerging trends in suicide assessment inappropriate assessment might fail to pick potential suicide patients. Research design and research tradition The traditional phenomenography which analyses the different ways in which people experience, conceptualize, identify, and familiarize themselves with various aspects of phenomena in the world around them was used in this study. This method is frequently used in health care research and was utilized in an inductive, qualitative and descriptive approach to help understand the conceptualizations of suicide by psychiatric nurses and the strategies that psychiatric nurses utilize when conducting a suicide evaluation. Sampling A convenience/snowball sampling method was utilized in the study to recruit six psychiatric-mental health nurse participants for the ten months study period. The participants were obtained from two advanced practice nurses agencies in different psychiatric settings and different Northeastern states with the help of nurse managers. One of the settings chosen was a psychiatric hospital's emergency assessment unit while the other was an inpatient psychiatric unit of a general hospital. Five of the six participating nurses were females with four of them having more than 15 years experience while the fifth had nine months experience as a psychiatric mental health nurse and more than five years experience as a mental health worker. The sixth participant was a male nurse with more than 15 years experience. All the participants were white with one having a master’s degree in nursing, three with bachelorâ€℠¢s degree and two with associate degrees in nursing. Data collection The research methods used for data collection were approved by the University of Rhode Island’s Institutional Review Board. Before data collection began consent was sought from both the participating nurses and the patients. The inclusion criteria for the patients included more than 18 years of age, ability to understand and speak English in addition to giving informed consent. The patients were also informed that their participation or non participation in the research would not affect the care they received from the institution. The data in this study was mainly obtained through interviews with the psychiatric nurses after suicide assessment of adult patients. The assessment sessions varied from between 15 minutes to one and a half hours among different patients. The interviews with the psychiatric nurses were recorded in a private room and were guided by a few questions. The nurses were however allowed to express their perceptions, in a clear and systematic manner, of how they conceptualize suicide and the strategies they use in the suicide assessment process. In a bid to obtain as much information and as possible the participating nurses were encouraged to think out aloud, deliberate, and even to pause before answering the questions if they need to. All the participating

Austrian Political Discourse Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Austrian Political Discourse - Case Study Example Since it was torn down in Austria there was adjustment that had to be made. It is important to know that politicians and the media were ecstatic about the changes yet they were not totally prepared for the changes, both good and bad, that would manifest in the future. Armed with wire-cutters, Austria's Foreign Minister Alois Mock was shown doing his part--literally as well as symbolically--to open the border between Austria and Hungary. 1 The end of 1989 witnessed the success of the Rumanian "revolution," and the fall of eastern European Stalinist regimes (or the death of Marxism, according to taste) was everywhere exuberantly acclaimed. As the first waves of refugees and immigrants seeking asylum and work made their way westward, however, this enthusiasm soon dampened.2 By the end of 1989 many changes had occurred. Included was the fall of eastern European Stalinist regimes. Other significant events that resulted from the fall of the wall were the success of the Rumanian "revolution," and the demise of Marxism, according to taste. 3 Many things of significance politically ensued he fall of the wall Power became an issue when these paramount events took placer. Racism also became a significant factor. Shortly after the fall of the wall in 1989 refugees and immigrants seeking both work and asylum began making their... The influx of immigrants set the basis for fight for power in the new found freedom. As well the large amounts of immigrants seeking new found freedom in the west set the stage for problem with racism and one of the new arenas for this was Austria. They became known as" political" and "economic" refugees. They elided rather quickly to these new parts. .Without a doubt, the patronizing acceptance in Austria of political refugees from Communist eastern Europe seems to have disguised more profound ethnic conflict towards these groups of immigrants. . The uncertainties of this new political configuration in Europe occasioned the emergence in Austrian public life of xenophobic discourses, fed by and couched in the terms of social anxiety. Those who even a few months previously would have been largely welcomed as heroic refugees from tyrannical regimes, suddenly became socially more threatening "economic immigrants," "spirit and salami merchants," "criminals," etc., too lazy and selfish to remain in their countries and solve their own problems. 3 3 van Dijk, Teun. 1985. Prejudice in Discourse. Amsterdam: Benjamins. An indication of the political implications of this transformation was given in the campaign preceding the 1990 elections to the Austrian National Assembly. Confronted by the obvious success which the Austrian Freedom Party (Freiheitliche Partei sterreichs, or FP), seconded in its effort by the Neue Kronen Zeitung, the largest selling newspaper in Austria, was registering with its more or less explicit appeals to these ethnic hostilities, politicians from the mainstream Social Democratic Party (SP) and the Christian democratic Austrian People's Party (VP) quickly accommodated their own electoral strategies and general political

Edward Said

In any part in the world, there is no place to be but home. Home is a place where we feel safe and take refuge. But how we will feel if this is taken from us? The essay by Edward Said, â€Å"States,† narrates the story of about his country, Palestine, and the struggle of his countrymen. He also shares the passion of his homeland which we can relate to. â€Å"States† exemplify the experiences and perceptions of how important a home is to a common Palestinian. Our country is a big part of who we are. As we are born, we are destined to become a part of it. It becomes part of our identity. Things that we grew up with meant something to us. We usually treasure things that became part of our lives. Even unconsciously, we take hold of it. Home brings us memories, memories that we want to hold on up to our last breath. It plays a big role to our development, as a child and as a person fully. Home is part of ourselves which became a foundation of we are today. To be away from home makes us feel empty or incomplete in a sense. This is experience by people who are exiled from their own homeland. Exiles are treated as aliens and feel shame to one’s pride. As Said explains â€Å"exile is a series of portraits without names, without context. † (Said,555). Exile is a miserable thing. Nothing can be so embarrassing than to be taken away from home. It saddens a person to feel a stranger to his own country. One is not only deprived of the social rights but as well as the freedom. As described in the essay of Edward Said an exile is referred as â€Å"present absentees† where to their homeland, they are vanished and as for the host country they are viewed as aliens.

Niccolò Machiavellis Acquisition of Power Essay - 1327 Words

Niccolà ² Machiavelli is representative of Renaissance thinkers in his perception of government. No longer was government seen as an institution granted by God but rather governments were largely becoming arrangements or contracts between those that govern and the governed. Thinkers from Aristotle to Francis Bacon would expound on this idea of a social contract, but none would exemplify the realism and ruthlessness of modern politics like Machiavelli. While the word Machiavellian has become part of our lexicon as a term for the ruthless execution of political will glorifying the â€Å"ends justify the means† mentality, Machiavelli’s true legacy should be found in his belief that the state was more than a contract as Bacon or John Locke†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"Machiavelli viewed all turmoil as a result of an irremediable and tragic conflict between man’s limitless cupidity and the limited possibilities for its satisfaction.† Since this conf lict persisted throughout human history, the state plays a pivotal role in rectifying this scenario. Machiavelli outlines his ideas in his seminal work The Prince. In this work Machiavelli dissects the history of ancient Rome and Greece to better understand and comprehend the politics of his era. The Prince is guidebook and political treatise designed to help any prince or republican government best fulfill its role as â€Å"disciplinarian of ‘evil’ man.† To do this Machiavelli: [j]ustifies the book by showing that politics is a science from which men can learn, not just a learned recreation to be indulged in while Fortune dictates what is done; Fortune, he emphasizes, can, and must, be made to serve the deft and resolute prince. It was written to satisfy a need, but the impulse was personal rather than a specific political one. Throughout his work, Machiavelli exemplifies realist politics in their most basic and ruthless form. It is these judgments that allow the enlightened prince to govern effectively and maintain order within his state. By authoring The Prince and using it as a platform to emphasize his particular brand of politics, Machiavelli breaks new ground and by advising the reader to govern based on coldShow MoreRelatedIn the Defense of The Prince1333 Words   |  5 Pagesfeared than loved ?
